Crinkle Cookies

I've seen crinkle cookies, tasted crinkle cookies, but never baked crinkle cookies. In case you don't know what crinkle cookies are, they're the cookies that usually come in a chocolate variety that have cracks on the tops of them that are more recognizable with powdered sugar....like these.

Aren't they beautiful? Well I decided to try my hand at these.

Now the recipe I found for my Halloween themed crinkle cookies is a vanilla recipe which allows me to color the dough different colors. The recipe mimics a sugar cookie recipe I use...butter creamed with sugar, flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and vanilla. The crinkle cookie difference is the powdered sugar you roll your dough in before baking. Now I was interested in what the powdered sugar did to the cookie, so I decided to do a test batch with half of them rolled in powdered sugar and half of them without powdered sugar and then see what the difference was. See for yourselves...

Now idk about you but I didn't expect this at all! And I guess in retrospect it makes sense that the cracks would be from the expansion of the cookies cracking the sugar coat on the cookie. So if you want crinkle cookies and not sugar cookies DO roll your dough in powdered sugar! Below are the monster crinkle cookies I made with royal icing eyes I made a couple of days before.

Until next time!
